A story recently broke that Mexico has begun destruction of 79,074 firearms seized by drug cartels over a decade ago. The first of the guns were destroyed in a ceremony at a military base in Mexico City. It looks like Mexico is really starting to get behind the anti-drug cartel movement in a big way. I know the news about all of the drug wars in the past year has really been hurting their tourism industry.
Apparently, 35,000 additional guns that have been obtained by the police since President Calderon took office in late 2006 are still being held on to as they remain “evidence in [current] criminal investigations.”
Most of the guns used by the drug cartels that have killed over 11,000 people have come from the US, Mexican officials say.
These cartels seem to be more heavily armed than ever. For example, in Tijuana three police vehicles arrested suspected cartel member Moises Ruiz Flores, and two other men. The men were found with a police uniform, grenade launcher, pistol and a rifle. And then, just this Tuesday, Mexican officials arrested Pedro Banda Gaxiola on a US extradition request. He was taken in, along with two other men, and in their car 4.5 grams of methamphetamines were found.
I’m really, really glad to see Mexico is taking such a stand against drugs and the cartels. Such a beautiful place shouldn’t have to worry about these kinds of things. I hope you are having a great day!
