I know this blog is devoted to delivering positive news about Mexico, but I just stumbled onto this news story that is going on as I type and I had to share for those who are unaware of it. I hope that this is resolved quickly and without any casualties.
Three armed men have hijacked Aeromexico Flight 576 from Cancun, Mexico, according to local media. The plane hijacked in Cancun, flown to Mexico City Airport. According to the Mexican transport minister, the plane has landed safely in Mexico City.
According to flightstats.com, Aeromexico flight 576 operates on a Boeing 737 aircraft. The plane with 104 people on board was hijacked by 3 people who demand to meet with President Calderón. According to sources, the hijackers have not been able to enter the sealed cockpit and have threatened to blow up the plane if their demands are not met.
As of now, there is no information on the number of Americans on board. Aerovías de México, S.A. de C.V., operating as AeroMéxico, is an airline in Mexico based in Mexico City, Mexico.
Update as of 3:25 pm Central: All 104 people are off of the plane safely, at least 5 suspects have been detained by armed Mexican security forces in Mexico City. Whew, that is very good news!
